Arthroscopy
Joint arthroscopy
Joint arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows a doctor to examine the inside of a joint and treat problems through small incisions.
Common procedures
- Knee: Treatment of damaged menisci, ligaments or cartilage.
- Shoulder and ankle: Treatment of instability, tendon problems and ligament injuries.
- Diagnosis and treatment: Enables a precise diagnosis and treatment during the same procedure.

Reconstructive arthroscopy
Reconstructive arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which a doctor uses a slim camera (arthroscope) and specialised instruments inserted through small incisions to repair damaged structures within a joint, such as ligaments, menisci or cartilage.
Advantages over open surgery
- Minimally invasive approach: Less damage to surrounding tissue can mean less post-operative pain.
- Scarring: Only small, discreet scars remain after healing.
- Faster recovery: A shorter hospital stay, often as a day-case procedure, and a faster overall recovery.

Total joint replacement
Total knee replacement
Total knee replacement
Total knee replacement is a surgical procedure in which a damaged knee joint is replaced with an artificial implant. The most common reasons are advanced osteoarthritis of the knee (gonarthrosis), rheumatoid arthritis or severe damage following an injury, when standard non-surgical treatment such as medication and rehabilitation no longer provides relief and severe pain limits mobility.
Symptoms affecting everyday life
A doctor may recommend total knee replacement when symptoms have a major impact on your quality of life:
- Pain at rest and at night: The knee hurts even at rest, and severe pain disrupts sleep.
- Severely limited walking: Even short distances are painful, and going up or down stairs becomes difficult.
- Joint stiffness: The knee cannot be fully straightened or bent, making it difficult to sit down or stand up from a chair.

Total hip replacement
Total hip replacement
Total hip replacement is a surgical procedure in which a damaged hip joint is replaced with an artificial implant. It is considered when non-surgical treatment, such as medication and rehabilitation, is no longer effective and pain or restricted movement significantly affects quality of life.
Main reasons for surgery
- Advanced osteoarthritis of the hip (coxarthrosis): Wear of the joint cartilage causing pain when starting to move or during activity, and eventually at rest or at night.
- Femoral neck fracture: A common reason in older patients when conventional fracture fixation is not possible.
- Avascular necrosis of the femoral head: Bone tissue death caused by a disrupted blood supply.
- Rheumatoid arthritis or developmental abnormalities of the joint, such as hip dysplasia.
Joint replacement components vary in material. They commonly combine durable titanium or metal alloys, ceramic and specialised polyethylene (a type of plastic).
